The Next Big Thing in Mycology, with Stephen Russell

Tuesday, January 24th
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM Central

NAMA's FREE Zoom Webinar

Register here and you will receive zoom information the day of the event.

Russell discusses nanopore sequencing, a new DNA-sequencing technology that was used for specimens collected at the MO-NAMA 2022 Annual Foray. Interesting collections from that event will be reviewed. He will also discuss the upcoming 2023 Continental MycoBlitz and how you can submit your local collections for this North-American-continent-wide fungus-collecting effort.

Stephen Russell is a mycologist working on a biodiversity survey of all of the macrofungi (mushrooms) that occur in the his home state of Indiana. He founded The Hoosier Mushroom Society in 2009 and is currently the president of the organization. His initial interest in mushrooms began with cultivation, which led to writing a book titled The Essential Guide to Cultivating Mushrooms (Storey Publishing, 2014). He has chaired the NAMA Mycoflora Committee and was a co-founder of the North American Mycoflora Project, which has become the Fungal Diversity Survey (FunDiS). Stephen’s current project is a citizen-science and DNA-based exploration of local fungal biodiversity, which has now generated thousands of new DNA-sequenced collections of fungal fruitbodies from across the Indiana, amassing records for over 2,500 unique species and counting.

Baton Rouge Mycological Society (BRMS) is an informal group of people interested in mycology.  BRMS is committed to the promotion of educational and scientific activities related to fungi.  BRMS supports the protection of natural areas and their biological integrity.  We advocate the sustainable use of mushrooms as a resource and endorse responsible mushroom collecting that does not harm the fungi or their habitats.
