The City Nature Challenge 2023

Baton Rouge Master Naturalists are the lead local organizers

  • Four days and nights of documenting biodiversity in the Baton Rouge region in iNaturalist.
  • The BR region for this event is huge: 12 parishes spanning between the Atchafalaya River and the MS border! See map here https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2023-baton-rouge. Several WMAs and State Parks are in the region.
  • It is a global contest! Over 400 cities are participating worldwide.
  • Global contest criteria are: Most participants, most species, most iNaturalist observations.
  • Our local goal is to beat New Orleans and Austin.
  • The key is anything wild: Fungi, plants, animals, bugs… put out your trail cameras, run a moth sheet, have a foray, take the kids to the park, have fun with it! No landscape plants, humans, pets, etc.
April 28 - May 1 > Take photos or sound recordings of wild organisms in the 12 parish region and upload as observations in iNaturalist.
May 2-7 > ID Week: Identify observations made in the region & finish uploading your photos that were taken April 28-May 1.
May 8 > Winners announced. Last year La Paz, Bolivia won.

Baton Rouge Mycological Society (BRMS) is an informal group of people interested in mycology.  BRMS is committed to the promotion of educational and scientific activities related to fungi.  BRMS supports the protection of natural areas and their biological integrity.  We advocate the sustainable use of mushrooms as a resource and endorse responsible mushroom collecting that does not harm the fungi or their habitats.
